Oz Deathmatch

Oz Deathmatch is a multiplayer, server side modification for Half Life designed to provide extensive configurability for server administrators. It was developed in response to demand for a highly adaptable version of the game, allowing operators to customise gameplay mechanics without altering the core DLL. All standard multiplayer features of Half Life remain intact, with the exception of single player mode. At the centre of Oz Deathmatch is its comprehensive configuration file system, which enables administrators to modify a wide range of gameplay variables quickly and efficiently.

Gameplay Overview

Oz Deathmatch retains the familiar foundations of Half Life multiplayer whilst introducing a powerful layer of administrative control and gameplay flexibility. Server operators may adjust core mechanics such as weapon performance, player attributes, scoring systems, item behaviour, and environmental effects. This allows each server to establish its own identity, whether focused on competitive balance, experimental chaos, or fast paced arcade style combat. A distinctive addition is the Glide Offhand Grappling Hook, which introduces vertical mobility and tactical positioning. Players may traverse maps rapidly, establish elevated ambush points, or disrupt opponents with agile movement. Oz Deathmatch also incorporates a comprehensive Rune system, providing temporary power enhancements that significantly alter combat dynamics. These runes encourage aggressive play, strategic adaptation, and opportunistic engagement. The modification also supports integration with Rho Bot, enhancing server population and gameplay variety where required.

Key Features

Advanced Configuration System

Administrators may modify virtually every aspect of gameplay via configuration files, including:

  • Player and suit characteristics

  • Weapon damage values

  • Weapon recoil and fire rates

  • Projectile speeds

  • Magazine capacities

  • Ammunition limits and distribution

  • Starting weapons and ammunition

  • Respawn times for weapons, items, and ammunition

  • Enabling or disabling specific weapons

  • Laser and trail colours

  • Weapon priority and auto switching behaviour

  • Scoring values for kills, suicides, and related events

  • Blood effects

  • Glide grappling hook parameters

  • Rune properties, including cloaking strength and availability

This system allows extensive refinement without recompilation.

Glide Offhand Grappling Hook

The Glide grappling hook functions as an offhand tool activated via the +hook command. When deployed, it fires a projectile that anchors to surfaces and pulls the player towards the impact point.

Key characteristics include:

  • Rapid map traversal

  • Ability to suspend oneself at anchor points

  • Tactical ambush positioning

  • Minor damage dealt if a player is struck directly

  • Immediate disengagement upon release of the bound key

This mobility tool introduces vertical combat depth and fluid movement not present in standard Half Life multiplayer.

Rune System

Oz Deathmatch includes a diverse set of power up runes which grant temporary abilities. These may be configured or disabled by the server administrator.

Available runes include:

  • Regeneration, gradual health and armour recovery

  • Haste, increased weapon fire rate

  • Cloaking, partial invisibility

  • Crowbar, single strike elimination capability

  • Frag, bonus scoring per kill

  • Protection, reduced incoming damage

  • Low Gravity, enhanced jumping and reduced fall damage

  • Super Hook, enhanced grappling damage and speed

  • Vampire, health gained from inflicted damage

  • Booby Trap, explosive retaliation upon death

  • Super Glock, unlimited ammunition with enhanced secondary fire

  • Super Speed, significantly increased movement velocity

  • Identify, displays opponent status under crosshair

  • Random, continuously cycling rune effects

Players may discard a rune using the droprune command and may check their current rune status using runestatus.

Bot Support

Oz Deathmatch supports integration with Rho Bot, enabling artificial player population and extended gameplay options where required.
