Bubble Mod is a server-side-only modification for Half-Life. Players do not need to download or install anything to participate, simply join a server running Bubble Mod. While these servers are now rare, Outpost 42 still hosts Bubble Mod for fans of this classic Half-Life gameplay.

Gameplay Overview
BubbleMod retains the movement speed and responsiveness of GoldSrc, but it does not preserve default balance. Several high damage mechanics that defined late era public HLDM are intentionally adjusted.
The Tau Cannon no longer produces extreme splash damage through walls. The RPG and crossbow sniper damage are reduced. MP5 grenade cycling and carry limits are restricted. These changes prevent single key bind dominance and encourage deliberate engagement.
At the same time, new mechanics expand tactical depth:
-
Structured rune control introduces temporary power spikes
-
Several weapons receive alternate fire modes
-
Spawn abuse is actively prevented
-
Map specific configurations allow environment level control
-
Match flow tools improve server stability and fairness
The pacing becomes less explosive and more strategic. Control of runes, map positioning, and timing matters more than raw burst stacking.
Key Features
Spawn Protection
Newly spawned players receive temporary protection. Protection ends if the player fires or switches weapons. Spawn killing is detected within a defined time window and can trigger warnings, score nullification, or automated bans.
Tripmines, snark mines, and satchels placed on spawn points are automatically detonated and publicly announced. Persistent abuse results in enforcement action.
This system removes cheap spawn farming and stabilises match openings.
Type Protection Mode
Players may enter Type Protection by equipping the crowbar, facing a wall, and remaining still. While active:
-
They cannot be legitimately killed for score
-
Attackers receive penalties
-
A rear facing fisheye camera provides situational awareness
The mode exits if the player moves, attacks, switches weapons, or interacts with items.
It exists to prevent opportunistic kills while players read MOTD or communicate.
Weapon Rebalancing
BubbleMod reworks several stock weapons.
Tau Cannon
Wall penetration remains possible, but splash damage is dramatically reduced. Precision is required. Random wall blasting is no longer lethal.
RPG
Explosive damage is reduced, preventing one shot dominance in confined areas.
Crossbow
Sniper damage lowered. Tracers may be enabled. Long range kills remain viable but less oppressive.
MP5
Contact grenade damage reduced. Rate of fire slowed. Carry limit reduced. Grenade spam is curtailed.
Shotgun
Optional super shotgun mode available server side.
Crowbar
Alternate fire throws the crowbar as a projectile, dealing high base damage. The weapon can be retrieved after impact.
The Bubble Gun
The Gluon Gun is replaced with the Bubble Gun.
Primary fire emits harmless bubbles. These replenish underwater air and have no offensive function.
Alternate fire charges for several seconds and releases a healing pulse that restores health to the user and nearby players. If the Armour Rune is active, the pulse restores armour instead. The ability has a cooldown period.
This introduces a rare support mechanic into HLDM without turning the game into team class play.
The Hornet Gun Redesign
The Hornet Gun becomes a five mode multi function weapon. Secondary fire cycles modes. Primary fire activates the selected mode.
-
Squid Spit
Fires acid projectiles similar to Bullsquid attacks. -
Zap Gun
Direct lightning attack with high single target damage. -
Multizapper
Lightning bolt that forks and bounces, with reduced damage per fork but potential multi hit lethality. -
Freeze Ray
Freezes the target for several seconds. Frozen players cannot take damage, but can still be killed indirectly through environmental means. -
Snark Launcher
Launches high velocity snarks.
This redesign transforms the hornet from a passive projectile tool into a tactical multi role platform.
Rune System Detailed
Runes spawn near player spawn areas and relocate after use. Active rune holders glow in the rune’s colour.
Each rune has defined spawn count, active duration, and respawn delay. Server operators may control quantities and eligibility.
Super Crowbar Rune
Primary crowbar becomes one hit kill.
Secondary fire throws unlimited flying crowbars.
Duration approximately 30 seconds.
High risk close quarters dominance.
Mega Grenade Rune
Hand grenades become significantly more powerful.
Duration approximately 30 seconds.
Strong area denial capability.
Super Magnum Rune
357 damage increased dramatically.
Transforms the revolver into a precision elimination tool.
Duration approximately 30 seconds.
Extra Health Rune
Doubles health gained from medkits and HEV stations.
Encourages territorial control of resource locations.
Duration approximately 30 seconds.
Extra Armour Rune
Doubles armour gained from batteries and chargers.
Also converts Bubble Gun pulse to armour restoration.
Duration approximately 30 seconds.
Super Shotgun Rune
Triples shotgun fire rate and reduces reload delay.
Short window of close range devastation.
Duration approximately 30 seconds.
Random Rune System
Servers may spawn randomised rune objects. A bitmask system determines which rune types are eligible. Rune population, duration, and respawn intervals are configurable via CVARs.
This allows strict control over how volatile or restrained rune gameplay becomes.
Map Level Control
BubbleMod supports per map configuration files executed on map load.
Administrators may:
-
Create entities
-
Remove entities
-
Replace weapons or ammo
-
Modify gravity
-
Adjust frag limits
-
Spawn long jump modules
-
Override rune behaviour
-
Alter global CVAR values for specific maps
Maps can therefore behave differently without changing server wide settings.
Administrative and Match Systems
-
Spectator Mode with free roam and chase cam
-

-
Multi kill announcements
-
Rock the Vote map voting
-
Auto kick and ban enforcement
-
Anti spam protection
-
