Bubble Mod is a server-side-only modification for Half-Life. Players do not need to download or install anything to participate—simply join a server running Bubble Mod. While these servers are now rare, Outpost 42 still hosts Bubble Mod for fans of this classic Half-Life gameplay.
This mod significantly alters the standard Half-Life experience, making it more challenging and skill-intensive:
- High-damage weapons are weakened for balance.
- Critical gameplay exploits (like tau/grenade/RPG binds) are countered.
- New weapon modes and runes encourage team play and variety.
- These settings can be enabled/disabled depending on the server.

How to Install Bubble Mod
- Ensure you have a working HLDS server installed.
- Back up your original
valve
folder (e.g. copy it tovalve_bu
). - Download Bubble Mod from the link above and extract it into your
valve
directory (e.g.C:\hlds\valve
on Windows).
Next, configure Half-Life to run Bubble Mod instead of the default game by editing the liblist.gam:
//gamedll "dlls\hl.dll"
gamedll "dlls\bubblemod.dll"
Linux:
//gamedll_linux "dlls/hl.so"
gamedll_linux "dlls/bubblemod.so"
hl.dll
or hl.so
and update liblist.gam
accordingly.
Save liblist.gam
and start your server. If installed correctly, Bubble Mod will load.
Test it in-game — for example, right-clicking with the crowbar lets you throw it!
Configuration
Once Bubble Mod is running, customise it via bmod.cfg
in your valve
directory.
Options include enabling/disabling runes, tweaking weapon settings, and adjusting gameplay balance.
