Davroplex

Design

Davroplex is a simple but fun map with a unique design. While some might call it a "killbox," that doesn’t feel fair since there’s a lot happening here. The map is built around a central cinema structure, which even includes an underground water system. It’s a strange choice, but it works and adds to the fun. The layout is well-balanced—not too cramped, but still full of interesting details. One of its standout features is the nostalgic films shown in the cinema, adding a charming touch to the map (mind you, they were the "In Movies" at the time). You can even stop and watch a film while inside the theater, which is a fun and unexpected addition. While it’s not the most advanced map, it captures the creativity of its time and delivers plenty of entertainment. Personally, I’ll always remember the chaos of playing this map while the Powerpuff Girls Movie played in the background, a perfect mix of mayhem and nostalgia.

Gameplay

Gameplay on Davroplex is pure chaos, especially with large player counts. It’s fast-paced, ridiculous, and incredibly fun. Whether you’re sneaking through the rooftops by launching yourself off bins outside the cinema, diving into the underground water area, or brawling in the lobby and cinema itself, the map offers plenty of opportunities for frenetic action. As a killbox map, it’s more about jumping into the chaos and enjoying the ride than applying deep strategic thinking. It’s a map that thrives on its simplicity and raw enjoyment factor.

Verdict

Released in 2001, Davroplex is a nostalgic throwback to a simpler time in map design. I remember reading the positive reviews upon its release, and it’s easy to see why it resonated with players. While the map doesn’t offer the technical depth of more modern designs, its fun factor remains undeniable. Depending on your style of play, this map may appeal more to casual or modded Half-Life experiences like Severian or Bubble Mod rather than competitive vanilla gameplay. All in all, Davroplex is a lot of fun to play and well worth a try for anyone looking to enjoy a lighthearted and chaotic match.

Summary

  • Description: The setting is a movie cinema late at night while no one is around. You can explore the cinema, the rooftop, and the underground sewers. Cool things you don't want to miss: You can start the movie by pressing the button on the movie projector, or shooting the area around the projector window from the movie floor. In the projector room is a stack of crates in the corner that you can crawl inside. In the lobby you can use the soda machine for health, and the candy machine for armor. If the fire extinguisher takes enough damage, it will explode. The fire alarm switch opens a door under the stairs leading to a teleport. The dumpsters act as jump pads to get onto the roof.
