Released in 2000 and created by randomnine, Canned Tuna is a classic Half-Life mod that throws away the idea that more weapons automatically means more fun. Instead, it strips the arsenal down to just five wildly distinct weapons and builds the entire experience around speed, chaos, and over-the-top combat.
Rather than aiming for realism or restraint, Canned Tuna turns every match into a frantic and often ridiculous fight filled with jetpack duels, instant-gib crowbar kills, powerful long-range shots and hidden sonic traps.

Gameplay Overview
Canned Tuna gives every player the same tightly focused loadout from the start, removing the need to hunt for weapons and keeping the action immediate. Although there are only five main weapons, each one fills a very specific role and feels exaggerated enough to make every encounter memorable.
The crowbar is no longer just a basic melee tool. In Canned Tuna, getting close enough to use it can result in an instant gib, making it one of the most brutal weapons in the game.
The laser rifle serves as the long-range option, offering deadly accuracy at distance and acting as the mod’s equivalent of a sniper weapon.
The machine gun is built for pure destruction, firing fast enough to tear through opponents quickly and becoming a favourite weapon during jetpack battles.
The mortar, a modified rocket launcher, fires powerful projectiles in a downward arc, creating explosive and chaotic combat that rewards experimentation more than precision.
Finally, the sonic tripmine replaces the standard visible laser beam with sound, forcing players to react to its ominous hum rather than simply spotting a line across the room. Players receive two tripmines per spawn, and with no standard weapon pickups in the map, replacements only come when they respawn.
The other major feature is the jetpack, which dramatically changes movement and map flow. Holding jump sends the player airborne, but controlling the pack takes practice, especially because fall damage is permanently set to a more realistic style. Players who fly carelessly or descend too quickly will pay for it hard. This gives movement a chaotic but risky edge that becomes central to the mod’s identity.
Canned Tuna also includes a variety of unusual gameplay modes, all based around deathmatch. Gib the Llamas is one of the most memorable, with players alternating between fast, crowbar-wielding jetpack users and slower, more heavily armed normal fighters. Other modes include Instagib, 1-on-1 arena-style play, monster-spawning modes, and a rune-based mode where players collect and drop glowing pickups during combat. .
