Sook’s Quake-Life 1999

I’ve launched a new server called Sook’s Quake-Life 1999, running the latest version of Bubble 25.

The idea behind the server is to create a fast paced style of Half-Life deathmatch that combines some of my favourite aspects of Severian’s Mod and Bubble Mod, while adding a few new features of its own.

The Hornet Gun has been completely reworked. Its primary fire is now a Quake style grenade launcher, while secondary fire uses the Shock Beam from Opposing Force. The Shock Beam is particularly deadly around water, and even more so when combined with the Damage Rune!

Grenades and other explosions now cause a slight screen shake, which is partly where the name Quake-Life comes from.

The Egon keeps its primary fire as bubbles, which I still think is hilarious, but its secondary attack has now been repurposed as a healing function. It costs 20 ammo and restores you to full health, although it takes around two seconds to do so, leaving you vulnerable while you heal.

I’ve also added a new Long Jump Rune. There is nothing too complicated about this one. It only spawns on maps where a Long Jump Module isn’t already present and works just like the other runes. It can also be dropped at any time using the drop_rune command.

I’ve added some recoil to both the Shotgun and 9mmAR. These are essentially the primary weapons of the mod, so the recoil can now be used to your advantage as part of the movement.

The Shotgun can effectively be used to rocket jump, launching you upwards or across gaps. Try combining it with the Fast Shotgun Rune for even more fun. The 9mmAR recoil can also give you that little bit of extra distance when trying to reach awkward areas, clear gaps or get yourself across dangerous water or lava.

To give things a little more of that classic Quake and Deathmatch feel, I’ve also added new jumping and damage sounds similar to those heard in Deathmatch Classic and Team Fortress Classic. It’s a small change, but one I really like. It adds a surprising amount of atmosphere to the game, as you can hear players bunny hopping and taking damage.

Fraglimit: 30
Timelimit: 10 minutes

There’s also a large rotation of custom Half-Life maps, with built in voting at the end of the map, you can also nominate maps or rock the vote. I don’t think you can get bored on this server.

Anyway, jump on in and give it a go! If you enjoy fast, chaotic Half-Life deathmatch, I think you’ll have some fun with it.
