Welcome to MightyXen.com, an independent fan site dedicated to the original Half-Life and the community that grew around it. Inspired by the fan sites and gaming communities of the late 1990s and early 2000s, including Planet Half-Life, MightyXen aims to preserve a little of that era while providing a useful resource for players, server owners, modders and anyone who still enjoys the original game.

Our Mission

The main purpose of MightyXen is to preserve and document content from the original Half-Life community. Over the years, many of the websites, forums and file archives that once hosted this material have disappeared, taking a considerable amount of community history with them.

MightyXen is an attempt to keep some of that history available. The archive includes maps, player models, weapon models, sprites, modifications and other community created material, alongside guides, tutorials and historical information.

Where possible, I research the material being added to the archive and try to identify information such as the original creator and year of release. With files that may be more than twenty years old this is not always possible, but the aim is to provide as much accurate information as can reasonably be found rather than simply presenting a collection of downloads.

The Download Archive

A large part of MightyXen is its growing archive of original Half-Life community downloads. This includes custom maps, player models, weapon models, sprites, modifications and other files created and shared by the community over many years.

Some of this material was once widely available, while other files have become increasingly difficult to find as old community websites and download services have disappeared. The intention is to preserve these files and, where possible, document who created them and when they were released.

MightyXen does not claim ownership of community created material preserved within the archive. Original creators are credited wherever reasonably possible, and further information, corrections and requests from creators or rights holders are always welcome.

Guides and Helpful Tips

MightyXen also contains guides and technical information covering the original game, including installation, configuration, dedicated servers, multiplayer, modifications, mapping and general troubleshooting.

Some of the tools, techniques and information associated with the original Half-Life are now surprisingly difficult to find or poorly documented. Where I discover something useful, I try to document it clearly so that the information remains available to other players and server owners.

Modifications and Experiments

Modifications and custom content have always been a huge part of what made Half-Life special. MightyXen preserves classic modifications while also providing a home for my own experiments, server projects and modifications to the original game.

The site is intended to celebrate the creativity that surrounded Half-Life, from famous releases to strange little maps and modifications that may only have been played by a handful of people.

Useful Links and the Wider Community

MightyXen is only one small part of a community that has kept the original Half-Life alive for decades. The site includes links to other useful Half-Life websites, archives, tools and community projects.

There is still a remarkable amount of information and community material available online, but it is often spread across many different places. The aim is not to replace those resources, but to help people discover them and contribute towards keeping the wider community connected.

Embracing the Retro Theme

MightyXen deliberately takes inspiration from the gaming websites of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The idea is not simply to recreate an old website, but to retain some of the personality and character that made those early community sites enjoyable to explore.

Modern websites are often very polished, but the old Half-Life community was built around personal fan sites, clan pages, mapping communities, forums and download archives. MightyXen is intended to feel like a modern continuation of that tradition.

MightyXen.com is an independent and unofficial fan and preservation website. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or otherwise associated with Valve Corporation.

Half-Life, Valve, Steam and related names, trademarks, characters and game assets remain the property of Valve Corporation or their respective rights holders. Community created material remains the property of its respective creators and rights holders.

Join the Community

If you have old files, information, corrections, guides or anything else that could help improve the archive, contributions are very welcome.

In particular, if you recognise an old map, model, sprite or modification and know who created it or when it was originally released, that information can be extremely useful. A lot of Half-Life history has already disappeared from the internet, and even small pieces of information can help put some of it back together.

Ultimately, MightyXen exists because I still enjoy Half-Life. The goal is simply to preserve what I can, document what I discover and keep some of the creativity and character of the original community available for anyone who still wants to explore it.
